Three Health Management Services nurse educators cut patient dropout by more than two thirds.
Situation:
High Dropout Rate for a Self-Injectable Product
A top ten pharmaceutical company had a strong product for treating multiple sclerosis, but the overall patient dropout from treatment was discouraging – somewhere between 34% and 45%. In addition, competition in the category was intense, and two new competitive products were in clinical trials and close to approval.
The problem was one that is common across many therapeutic areas: No matter how effective the product, patients just don’t like to give themselves injections.
The customer came to Innovex Health Management Services for a program that could reach out to patients directly and persuade them of the benefits – and relative ease – of staying on the medication. They set a goal of cutting the dropout rate to 25%.
Solution:
Trained Health Management Services Nurse Educators Facilitate Self-Injection and Overcome Patient Reluctance
Innovex assigned three dedicated Health Management Services nurse educators to the project. Before going into the field, they received extensive training in the product and its use from the customer.
Their goal was to educate 180 new patients during the 12-month project, and to demonstrate to prescribers that their educational approach was increasing compliance and thus helping improve patient outcomes.

Dropouts reduced to 10% – well under half the targeted rate of 25%
The Health Management Services nurse educators taught 181 new patients the benefits of using the product as prescribed, and showed them how to use the self-injector. They also developed a report that they sent to update each prescribing neurologist after each patient contact.
The dropout rate went down to 10% – less than half the targeted rate of 25% and well under a third of the normal rate of 34% to 45%.
The increased compliance and patients’ willingness to continue long-term treatment contributed to an increase of 100% in the number of prescriptions written.
