QUINTILES ANNOUNCES NEW OPERATING STRUCTURE AND EXECUTIVE APPOINTMENTS
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - January 10, 2000 - Quintiles Transnational Corp. (Nasdaq: QTRN) today announced a change in its operating structure to enhance customer focus and efficiency.

Quintiles' three service groups will now have six lines of business. These six units will focus on key areas of service to the healthcare industry. Each unit is led by an experienced executive reporting to Dennis Gillings, Ph.D., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Quintiles Transnational.

"Our new structure reflects key drivers of our industry - the need to rapidly assess the viability of the burgeoning number of new drugs, cost-effectively accelerate development of the most promising drugs, quickly launch new medicines and evaluate their impact on healthcare," Gillings said. "To complement our four existing units, we've formed two new units - Early Development and Laboratory Services, and Quintiles Integrated Strategic Solutions.

"Each of our six units focuses on an important aspect of service delivery to the healthcare industry, while maintaining our integrated approach to complete outsourcing solutions for our customers. I believe this new structure positions the company for future growth and allows us to respond more quickly to customer needs and allocate resources more efficiently."

The service groups and their lines of business are:

Product Development -
* Early Development and Laboratory Services. This unit includes Quintiles' worldwide preclinical, clinical trial materials manufacturing and packaging, laboratory and Phase I operations. Led by Joseph P. Clancy, CEO;
* Clinical Development Services. This unit includes Phase II and III clinical trials operations. Led by Ludo Reynders, CEO.

Commercial Development -
* Quintiles Integrated Strategic Solutions. This unit focuses on strategies and services that bridge Product Development, Commercialization and QUINTERNET (TM) Informatics. It includes Quintiles Advanced Phase Solutions; Quintiles Consulting; The Lewin Group; and Quintiles Medical Communications. Led by Richard Johnson, M.D., CEO;
* Quintiles Commercialization. This includes Innovex sales and marketing services. Led by James Mauzey, CEO.

QUINTERNET(TM) Informatics -
* ENVOY Corporation. ENVOY provides electronic healthcare transactions processing. Led by Jim Kever, CEO;
* Quintiles Informatics. This unit provides unique market research and healthcare information to pharmaceutical and healthcare customers. Led by Gregory Porter, CEO.

"The new leaders I'm announcing today, Joe Clancy and Rich Johnson, each bring a wealth of experience in both business management and technical operations to add value to our customers' businesses by accelerating drug development and market penetration," Gillings said.

Clancy was most recently President of Quintiles Product Development, Europe. Prior to that, he was a Group Vice President responsible for a number of therapeutic specialty areas and services. Clancy was on BRI International's Board of Directors from 1985 to 1996, when BRI was acquired by Quintiles.
