NEIL MACALLISTER APPOINTED CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF INNOVEX

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - September 1, 2000 - Quintiles Transnational Corp. (Nasdaq: QTRN) today announced the appointment of Neil MacAllister as Chief Executive Officer of Quintiles' commercialization unit, Innovex, the world's leading supplier of integrated commercialization solutions to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

MacAllister had been Senior Vice President, Corporate Strategic Development and Planning, for Quintiles Transnational. Prior to joining Quintiles in September 1999, MacAllister was worldwide head of pharmaceutical company consulting activities for IBM, where he worked with major pharmaceutical clients in developing business strategies and organizations to take advantage of e-business and informatics in sales and marketing and research and development.

As CEO of Innovex, MacAllister will be responsible for the day-to-day global operations of the business, which has 10,000 employees and operations in more than 20 countries. MacAllister succeeds James Mauzey, who is leaving to take a senior management position with a pharmaceutical company.

In his new position, MacAllister will continue to report to Dennis Gillings, Ph.D., Quintiles Transnational Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

"Neil's strong leadership skills, proven management ability and broad industry experience make him extremely well-suited to lead our Innovex unit," Gillings said. "Over the past year, Neil has overseen our strategic planning process and put in place our global account structure to further strengthen Quintiles' customer relationships. He's also been closely involved with the evolution of Quintiles' strategy in commercialization, e-business and informatics.

"Neil's experience will further enhance Innovex's ability to evolve its service offerings through e-business and wireless technologies, and by leveraging the unique market intelligence available from Quintiles Informatics. Neil has 'carried the bag' as a sales representative and has held increasingly responsible sales and marketing positions within a pharma company. He also has worked with major pharma companies on sales and marketing strategies and has driven the development of overall commercial organizations at both the national and global levels. Neil's appointment to lead Innovex is good news for both Quintiles and our customers."

Gillings continued, "I'd like to thank Jim for his contributions to Innovex, particularly in strengthening its management team and expanding the global reach of Innovex's sales and marketing services."

In his distinguished 20-year career, MacAllister also has served as a principal in the global pharmaceutical practice of Booz, Allen & Hamilton, providing management consulting advice to many major pharmaceutical companies in business strategy and organizational transformation, particularly in sales and marketing. Prior to joining Booz, Allen & Hamilton, MacAllister was head of the business consulting and publications group for the Wood MacKenzie organization (now part of Deutsche Bank), where he worked with clients on overall corporate development, mergers and acquisitions, and venture capital.
